Cairns Tropical Pride

What’s going on?

OUT! AFTER ELTON

Party on after the Elton John Concert with the first party of 2017 Cairns Tropical Pride in Meeting Room 6 of the Cairns Hilton. Don’t let the name put you off – it’s, in fact, the former Ribbons Niteclub, notorious as a 1990’s LGBT+ club space – now freshly renovated and ready to relive those glory days.

Party on with music from top local DJ’s and entertainment by top local drag queens and wear your sunglasses at night, your best Elton John glasses, to WIN.

SLIP ‘N SLIDE ART LAUNCH

Celebrate the launch of the Tropical Gaze Art Exhibition, one of the largest exhibitions of LGBT+ art in Australia, this year bigger and better than ever. Featuring an eclectic mix of artworks, styles and mediums, the exhibition showcases both recognised and emerging artists.

The night accommodates the high brow… and the low.

Artists will present multi-media biographical vignettes and there’ll be a drag show because honestly, when did you last see a drag show at a gala opening night in a leading gallery?

The night will offer the first opportunity to take in The Sealed Section, a retrospective display of HIV/AIDS art posters produced in Australia since the 1980’s and gathered from archives and collections across the nation by our Event Director for this one off exhibition.

Slip ‘n Slide takes place in Tank 4 of the magnificent Tanks Arts Centre, originally built during WWII to be camouflaged by the rainforest shroud of Mount Whitfield, and now a stand alone venue, and an integral component of the Heritage listed Cairns Botanic Gardens.

There’ll be canapes and a cash bar.

PASSING GLANCES

A HISTORY OF GAY CAIRNS

BY IAN BYFORD

Cairns Tropical Pride and Cairns City Library present a book display celebrating PASSING GLANCES: A History of Gay Cairns by Ian Byford, documenting the LGBT+ experience in Cairns from the naming of the new settlement after the supposed gay Governor of Queensland, Sir William Wellington Cairns up to the most recent gay law reforms on the eve of the book’s publication in 2017.

The display includes quotes from the book and enlargements of some of its many illustrations. Put in an entry to win a copy of the book while you’re there and of course, the book is available for loan at Cairns City Library.
