Malta has made history by banning so-called gay ‘conversion therapy’.

The island nation becomes the first country in Europe to outlaw the harmful practice, after passing a bill that means medical professionals found to be performing or advertising such ‘therapy’ could face fines and jail time.

In addition, the Affirmation of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression Bill affirms that no LGBT+ person will be considered to have a disorder, disease or shortcoming of any sort.

The bill, which was unanimously supported by all MPs in Maltese Parliament, was welcomed by the Malta Chamber of Psychologists who branded gay ‘cure’ therapy “inhumane”.

A spokesperson said: “Not only does it reject a group of individuals on the basis of unfound prejudice and lack of tolerance for diversity, but also because it impinges on the international recognition of LGBTIQ rights.

“As a body we promote respect and equality for all persons, and are determined to continue working towards ensuring our clients can enjoy as safe a therapeutic experience as they deserve.”

It’s no surprise that Malta was the first place in Europe to outlaw gay ‘conversion therapy’ – last year, the country was named the best for LGBT equality and inclusiveness by ILGA-Europe.

Meanwhile, it was revealed last month that 153 same-sex couples have taken advantage of Malta’s civil union laws.
